Wind energy is together with hydro power one of the renewable forms of energy, that in an overall perspective cause the least CO2- emission (M.Jakobsen 12/08). Furthermore is wind energy, especially in our climes, often alternating available to solar energy (If there is no sun, usually there is wind). This is also valid seasonal (highest wind energy in winter). While the usage of solar energy tends to move towards decentralization, the usage of wind energy just starts. This is not least because the two controversial sides. The usage of wind energy with conventional facilities (windmills) is, together with the climate protection, on one side and on the other side there are protection of nature and abutting owner's interests. The controversial approaches to this form of the usage of wind energy are mainly caused by bird strikes, the interference of the visibility because of the high poles, the resulting shadowing and especially the noise generation.

This used wind turbine is based on the principle and the advantages of a Savonius-rotor. It can easily be deployed everywhere (especially in obstructed areas). Therefore the small wind power facility must have the following features:

  • Cost-efficient and easy constructible and easy to assemble (perhaps building integration)
  • High torque at a relatively low rotational speed (nearly ground level)
  • High efficiency unaffected by the direction of the wind, no alignment with the wind necessary
  • Even useable at extremely low wind speeds (2-3 m/s)
  • Storm-proof due to autonomous power limitation
  • Barely noticeable running noise, no bird strike
  • Turning parts are barely visible
  • Improvement of the wind situation at the location (behind the turbine - alternate function as a windshield)

Having the input, a form for the prototype, which measures up with the latest knowledge, has been developed. Previously a comprehensive literature research has been conducted. The turbine works well as a decentralized, building integrated wind energy facility and is supposed to be merchandized as such later on.
